Eva Larue Loses Battle with City over Gate

The City Council on Tuesday voted to require “CSI: Miami” actress Eva La Rue to remove the gate she illegally constructed in front of her north Glendale home.

The decision officially concludes weeks of controversy that generated heated debate at City Hall and extensive media and community attention.

La Rue had said she built the gate to guard against an alleged stalker, but neighborhood residents decried the addition, which according to city code was built too close to the right-of-way, as blatantly flouting zoning regulations.

The actress has since moved out of the north Glendale home, according to her attorney.

Councilman Ara Najarian — who cast the sole dissenting vote after repeatedly arguing that La Rue’s appeal was an example of a misapplication of city law — last week successfully lobbied for an official discussion of the appeals process, which has yet to be scheduled.

The hubbub (read: Gategate) began in 2007, when La Rue built the gate in front of her home without the proper permits. A zoning administrator gave La Rue a variance, which neighbors and a homeowner's group called an unfair exception.

La Rue said she built the gate to deter a stalker.

"I am asking please, please to keep my gate. I'm a single mom. I know that this gate can't really protect me from somebody that wants to do me and my 8-year-old harm, but at least it is some sort of barrier," La Rue told the council last month.

El cerco fue hecho sin los permisos correspondientes y además bordea el derecho del paso público, por lo que la actriz fue citada por los agentes del código urbano de la ciudad.

Los vecinos de la actriz han mostrado su descontento y el debate ha sido tal, que el caso ha llegado hasta el ayuntamiento. La Rue explica que lo construyó para protegerse de los acosadores. “Soy madre soltera y debo resguardar la vida de mi hijo de ocho años”, comentó.

La actriz instalar la valla hasta en su propiedad Glendale sin un permiso adecuado y muy cerca de una vía pública, y sus vecinos se quejaron.
Pero, después de conocer que la estrella había actuado para bloquear su casa desde los ojos de un presunto acosador, las autoridades locales desestimaron una citación por agentes de la aplicación del código y le otorgó un pase de La Rue.

Actress Eva La Rue is in a bit of a spat with the City of Glendale and some neighbors over a wooden gate at the front of her home that was built without proper permits.

Growing up in Norco, actress Eva La Rue spent most weekends roaming the trails and the Santa Ana riverbed on horseback, often coming home with scrapes and bruises. Sometimes she even returned without her horse.

"We'd be gone all day Saturday and Sunday," La Rue said in a phone interview. "We didn't have cell phones. There were plenty of times we came back without our ponies after getting bounced off. We'd come back all banged up and bloodied.

"It was an awesome way to grow up."

Eva La Rue stars with David Caruso on "CSI: Miami." She's a graduate of Norco High School, a former Miss County of Riverside and still has family in the community.

La Rue's mother, Marcie La Rue, still lives in Norco in the home Eva grew up in.

During her childhood, Eva gained a love of animals and a strong sense of independence.

These attributes have shaped a life of adventurous travel and a successful acting career.

La Rue attended Riverside Elementary School, then Norco Junior High School and then Norco Senior High School.

Best known for her character Natalia Boa Vista on "CSI: Miami" and her past role, Dr. Maria Santos on "All My Children," La Rue got her start on the Inland beauty pageant circuit.

At 6, she won Little Miss California. During the 1980s, she became Miss American Teenager, senior homecoming queen for Norco High School, Miss County of Riverside and Citrus Queen for the National Orange Show.

La Rue's 8-year-old daughter, Kaya, is following in mom's footsteps and rides horses as well. She's growing up in Los Angeles rather than Horsetown U.S.A. but she's taking lessons and learning.

"I wish we had them in the backyard," La Rue said. "It's different when you can just jump on bareback anytime."

Kaya has different ideas about a career path.

"She doesn't like being on my side of the camera," La Rue said. "She loves going to work with me because they let her call action and shoot. But she likes being behind the scenes."

La Rue recently announced her engagement to Joe Cappuccio during a black-tie gala on the opening night of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. He popped the question the week before during a vacation to Bora Bora.

The wedding's location is still up in the air.

"Every day we talk about a new idea," she said. "We really want to do it in an elephant tent camp in Thailand. We're super intrepid travelers. But it's not really ideal to drag 30 people there. So we're just thinking we'll go there for our honeymoon."

La Rue has about three more months until she and the cast of "CSI: Miami" go on hiatus for the season. When asked about her character, she said she loves her.

"She's far smarter than I," she said, laughing. "I love the show, it's a blast. The cast is awesome. It's really fun to go to work."

Most of the cast is thinking about what projects to take on during the show's hiatus period, but La Rue has other plans.

"I'll be getting married," she said. "So I'll be pretty busy."
